Biologically Inspired Computer Networks

A team of computer network designers has drawn inspiration from the design inherent in biological systems. A biological system’s ability to survive relies critically on its ability to respond to changes in environment, even when this adaptability means suboptimal resource usage in a particular environment. Drawing insight from how a select bacterium responds to change, the team of computer experts devised a networking scheme that operated much more robustly in noisy environments where various network nodes crashed. Such human-designed systems increasingly resemble biological systems that supposedly arose by chance. RTB’s creation model argues that a better match to the data involves a supernatural Creator who designed the biological systems.

Resurrected Proteins and the Case for Biological Evolution

Recently, a team of researchers from Spain resurrected a 4-billion-year-old version of a protein that belongs to a class of proteins known as thioredoxins. The ability to resurrect ancient proteins using principles integral to the evolutionary paradigm is the type of advance that many scientists point to as evidence for biological evolution. In this article, I discuss how this work can be seamlessly accommodated within a creation/design paradigm.

Living in Southern California means I don’t often meet Urdu-speaking people who would appreciate the regal heritage connected to my family name. But I do meet a lot of Spanish speakers. And when I introduce myself, I often see raised eyebrows and smiles.

Growing up, I felt a need to be like the people I admired. So for a time I wanted to be like Jerry West (the hall of fame shooting guard for the Los Angeles Lakers). Later I wanted to be like Beatles legend John Lennon. However, in the eighth grade while writing a report on the Second World War, I discovered two photographs of my father in The Decline and Fall of Nazi Germany and Imperial Japan by Hans Dollinger. I further discovered that my seemingly ordinary father had received both the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart Medals during his tour of duty in Europe. I was embarrassed that I had not recognized what an important role model my dad had always been. From that time I’ve been an avid student of World War II, even taking part of my undergraduate studies in history.

These two quotes by Thomas Edison highlight the difficulties in making a good idea work. A good idea comes to fruition only after much hard work, but conceiving a good idea is not trivial. As one source of design ideas, biological organisms continue to provide inspiration for technological advancements that often exceed the ideas humans could conceive on their own. A recent bio-inspired design may lead to better transport networks.

The Shroud of Turin contains the faint image of a man identical to the biblical descriptions of the crucified Jesus. Interest in the Shroud of Turin intensified when a photograph in 1898 unexpectedly produced an enhanced, photonegative-like image of the man.1 In a previous post, “The Shroud of Turin, Part 1: An Examination of the Man,” we discussed a forensic medical examination of the man pictured on the cloth. In this post, we’ll examine the physical and chemical characteristics of the cloth and consider how the man’s image may have formed.

It’s one of the classic episodes of I Love Lucy. Originally aired on September 15, 1952, the episode entitled “Job Switching” finds Lucy and Ethel working at a candy factory. They have been assigned to an assembly line, where they are supposed to pick up pieces of candy from a moving conveyor belt, wrap them, and place the candy back on the assembly line. But the conveyor belt moves too fast for Lucy and Ethel to keep up. Eventually, they both start stuffing pieces of candy into their mouths, under their hats, and in their blouses, as fast as they can as pieces of candy on the assembly line quickly move beyond their reach—a scene of comedic brilliance.
