Where Science and Faith Converge

Today's New Reason to Believe

Author: Hugh Ross

Reasons to Believe emerged from my passion to research, develop, and proclaim the most powerful new reasons to believe in Christ as Creator, Lord, and Savior and to use those new reasons to reach people for Christ. I also am eager to equip Christians to engage, rather than withdraw from or attack, educated non-Christians. One of the approaches I’ve developed, with the help of my RTB colleagues, is a biblical creation model that is testable, falsifiable, and predictive.

I enjoy constructively integrating all 66 books of the Bible with all the science disciplines as a way to discover and apply deeper truths. 1 Peter 3:15–16 sets my ministry goal, "Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience."

On December 27, I counted more than a dozen web articles announcing that radio signals from deep space could be from intelligent aliens. These articles created a web buzz that generated a flurry of questions, including:

For life to be possible on a planet, the planet must simultaneously reside in all the known habitable zones. So far, astronomers have identified nine distinct habitable zones. I described eight of these zones in my book Improbable Planet.1 The ninth, the electric field habitable zone, was discovered just several months ago.

One of the things I especially like about the Christmas season are Christmas carols, Christmas cantatas, and Christmas oratorios. The lyrics are loaded with doctrinal teachings that by themselves compel worship of our God who chose to become a man in order that we might be saved from sin and death.

  • Does Dissipation-Driven Theory Explain Life’s Origin?

    December 7, 2016

Starting about 50 years ago, the origin of life became a showstopper for atheists. For example, over the past 35 years I have had many public debates and dialogues with atheist biologists and chemists. Whenever I brought up the origin of life in those debates, the atheist would do everything he or she could to dodge the issue, or when that was not possible, concede that no reasonable naturalistic explanation for life’s origin exists.

  • Has the Light Travel Time Problem Been Resolved?

    December 5, 2016

The Light Travel Time Problem One problem for young-universe creationists is that astronomers observe galaxies that are millions and billions of light-years away. Given the finite and constant velocity of light, the light from these galaxies must have traveled from the galaxies to the astronomers' telescopes for millions and billions of years.

In my last blog post I wrote about how astronomers have accumulated overwhelming evidence that the universe will continue to expand at an ever increasing rate. This accelerating cosmic expansion rate is due to slightly more than two-thirds of the universe being composed of dark energy.

About a month ago, three physicists published a paper in Scientific Reports in which they called into question what most scientists consider the greatest scientific discovery of the twentieth century.1 In 2011 the Nobel Prize in physics was awarded to the leaders of two research teams who, through observations made in the 1990s of a certain kind of supernovae (type Ia supernovae), discovered that the expansion of the universe has transitioned from decelerating to accelerating. This transition implied that the two teams had found a missing piece of the universe. The missing piece they found was more than just a piece. It makes up more than two-thirds of the entirety of the universe.

  • Why Didn’t God Keep Satan Out of Eden?

    November 23, 2016

One of the most frequent questions I get from children is, why didn’t God keep Satan out of Eden? It’s not just a question I get from children. I hear this question at nearly every one of my speaking events. I especially hear the question when I speak to an audience of highly educated atheists and skeptics. Highly educated atheists and skeptics frequently assert that if Satan actually entered the Garden of Eden and successfully tempted Adam and Eve to rebel against God, then Christianity at a minimum is inconsistent and more likely is plainly false.

  • Does Nature Today Reveal More or Less About God? Part 2

    November 16, 2016

In my previous blog article, I explained and described how science today reveals exponentially more about God, his attributes, and his plans for humanity than it did just a century ago. This exponential increase in revelation from the book of nature provides the fuel for the ministry of Reasons to Believe. Because of this increase, we are seeing unprecedented numbers of skeptics becoming faithful followers of Christ.

    November 14, 2016

I get a lot of questions about how effectively science reveals God. One of the most common is, does science reveal more about God today than it did a century ago? Another question I receive is, if science reveals much more about God than it did in the past, why are there so many more atheists today than in the past?

  • Did Any Other Humans Survive the Flood?

    November 9, 2016

I get many questions about Noah’s flood (see last week's blog post), and one of the most frequent questions I get asked is whether any credible Bible interpretation of the flood allows for the survival of humans who were not on board Noah’s ark. My answer depends on how the questioner defines “credible.”

  • Too Much Water Is Bad for Life!

    November 7, 2016

The mantra for the astrobiology community is “Follow the water”—for good reason. Without liquid water, there is no possibility of life. However, many in the astrobiological community take the mantra too far. They consider every planet on which there is the possibility that liquid water may exist on some part of the planet’s surface for some period in the planet’s history as habitable.

  • Middle Ground in the Age of the Universe Debate

    October 26, 2016

As many of you are well aware, there is a fierce, seemingly never-ending debate in the Christian community over the age of the universe. For several decades now I have been at the center of this debate, having written three books,1 contributed to a debate book,2 and participated in more than a dozen public debates,3 with more books and debates sure to come.

The most elaborate birthday celebration I ever had was the one that our Reasons to Believe staff organized for my 60th birthday. I was expecting just a token nod for having completed 60 trips around the sun. Instead, I was feted by 60 guests for several hours. The most generous comment of the night was that I had finally attained middle age since I had reached half of the biblical limit on the human life span (Genesis 6:3).
