A Step Beyond
If you haven’t read Matt’s story in the “God at Work through You” section of the digest, please do so. Matt’s experience is a wonderful example of the way gentleness, kindness, and a spirit of reconciliation can turn difficult conversations into opportunities to share God’s truth.
To take your faith to the next level, consider practicing how you would approach those who disagree with you.
- Start with listening. Be sure to listen much more than you speak.
- Next, when you do speak, do so with gentleness and humility. When winning others over, beating them over the head is never a good way to go. Remember that emotional attachments to ideas and positions can be strong. Like Matt explained, it can take quite a while for someone to be open to a different viewpoint.
- Finally, let the Holy Spirit do His work. You aren’t there to be the converter. You’re there to bring the Word so that God can work in people’s hearts. You need to give them room to work it out for themselves.
Practice this with friends who are willing to play the role of someone who disagrees. In your preparation, you will see God work miracles to bring people into your life with whom you can share.
