Good Science, Good Faith

"Good Science, Good Faith" is a year-long high-school Philosophy of Science elective. This course integrates what your sons and daughters have learned from previous science textbooks with the best biblical research, giving them a solid foundation for their faith.

Content for the two 10-week sessions comes from the research and writing of Reasons To Believe scholars, including Dr. Hugh Ross and Dr. Fuz Rana.

Our instructors break down complex concepts into appropriate segments that teens can grasp.

"Good Science, Good Faith" covers critical questions students will face during their college years:

  • Did the big bang really happen?
  • Did the first life come from an ancient primordial soup?
  • Did humans evolve from apes?
  • How long were the "days" in Genesis 1?

Course #1 lays the biblical foundation for integrating the Bible with modern science. Course #2 explores the creation vs. evolution controversy.

The "Good Science, Good Faith" curriculum allows students to compare and contrast a variety of viewpoints, including evolution, young-earth creationism, and RTB's testable creation model. Then students walk through a fact-based approach to answering these critical questions for themselves and for others who may ask them.

Most importantly, students will learn how the discoveries of science repeatedly confirm the accuracy of the Bible!

Because "Good Science, Good Faith" is based on RTB's cutting-edge research, the information students receive is reliable and up-to-date. Let Reasons Academy enhance and augment your efforts to show, with confidence, how the Bible and science fit together. This course could very well be the most crucial to your son's or daughter's spiritual and academic future.

How Reasons Academy works

To participate in Reasons Academy, a student needs a computer with high-speed Internet connection, the capacity to play Real Media files, a DVD player, and an e-mail account.

Step #1: Call (800) 482-7836 x116 or e-mail the Course Coordinator at  for information about how to register your son or daughter for our convenient at-home learning program. Sessions are held throughout the year, even during the summer months, to accommodate your unique scheduling needs. Once your student is registered, you will receive a User ID and Password with which to logon to the online learning environment throughout the course.

Step #2: Go to RTB's online Web store and click on "Reasons Institute" to order your materials.

The course begins with some basic instructions on how to complete the program. Then, each week students watch a video, listen to a lecture, and answer questions based on what they have learned. Students go through each lesson at their own pace.

Once they have completed the week's lesson, students log on to the Web CT learning platform and participate in threaded discussions moderated by RTB's highly trained apologists. Each course concludes with a final research paper and written exam to assess student progress.

Once a student has completed the entire program, he or she receives a report card with a number grade (easily converted to a letter grade) and a certificate of completion.

Accreditation

Most states classify homeschools as private schools. In these cases, parents are the ones who provide the "accreditation" for their child's education. In other words, the parents, not a third party, provide the quality guarantee for their children's education. While homeschooling is legal in all 50 states, parents should check their local laws so as to conform to their requirements and provide proper documentation. The Home School Legal Defense Association has a helpful summary of those laws on its Web site.

While courses offered through Reasons Academy are not accredited by any third party, our graduate and undergraduate courses (on which our high school course is based) are all accredited by WASC (the highest level of university accreditation). Our distance education program is conducted by instructors/moderators, but parents are ultimately responsible for gauging the quality of the education and assigning the appropriate letter grade. The Reasons To Believe instructor will recommend a grade based on the student's performance, and then give parents the final say in the matter.

We recommend that the year-long "Good Science, Good Faith" course be recorded as a Philosophy of Science course worth 1.5 credits.

One issue that Christian parents should be aware of is that some universities now question the use of young-earth-creationist science textbooks. In 2005, the University of California system proposed requiring students who used creation-science textbooks in high school to take a proficiency exam in order to demonstrate an adequate knowledge of science to enter the college science classroom. It remains to be seen what, if anything, will result from such efforts. Because Reasons Academy does not use creation-science textbooks, this issue need not be a concern for parents who choose our program.

We consider the courses offered through Reasons Academy to provide a serious, academically challenging, and highly rewarding distance-learning program. Our textbooks and videos are from mainstream publishers, including PBS and the Discovery Channel. Even so, Reasons Academy makes no guarantee regarding the acceptance of our courses by any public or private school or any other educating body. Questions regarding acceptance requirements should be directed to the admissions official at the institution of application.
