What Does CVV2 Mean?

CVV2 - Credit Verification Value

The Credit Verification Value (CVV2) is a numeric code that appears on Visa MasterCard, Discover, and American Express credit cards. The code appears only on the card and is used for verification purposes. If someone does not know the code then they do not have the card in front of them which would be a possible indicator of fraud. Many banks now require the verification code to be entered when processing cards. Others charge a higher processing rate if a code is not entered.

On Visa, MasterCard, and Discover, it is a 3 digit number located on the back of the card above and to the right of the signature box. On American Express cards, the CVV2 is located above the card numbers on the right hand side.
