  • Did Neanderthals Make Art?

    January 22, 2015

When it comes to art, there’s often no accounting for taste. Art critics and philosophers aren’t the only people who debate what is or isn’t art; anthropologists do as well. This debate has significant consequences for understanding the origin of art and, ultimately, the origin of humanity.

  • Thank God for Hungry Hippos

    January 12, 2015

On one of my ministry trips to Africa I observed hippopotamus footprints along the banks of a river. My guide told me that as soon as the Sun drops low in the sky all the hippos exit the river and spend the evening, night, and dawn hours foraging for food on the land. As soon as the Sun rises much above the horizon, they return to the river once more.

  • Gamma Ray Burst Research Reveals Fine-tuning

    January 8, 2015

According to many science fiction movies, life thrives throughout the universe. Star Wars recounts long-past battles in “a galaxy far, far away.” In Contact, Ellie Arroway travels through wormholes to Vega where she encounters aliens who have billions of years of history. More recently, Interstellar depicted the search for planets in remote galaxies that could serve as a new home (after we manage to destroy Earth’s capacity to support human life). However, research into powerful gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) puts a damper on the unbridled optimism that complex life pervades the universe.

  • Truth Is More Than a Feeling

    January 3, 2015

I recently met a woman who had been raised in a strong Christian home, but had given up any conviction that Jesus’ work on the cross was the exclusive means of salvation. She had grown close to people from other faith traditions who sincerely believed they were following God. “How can it be,” she asked me, “that God would send such sincere people to Hell just because they failed to believe the one, narrow view that Jesus’ sacrifice is what saves us? I can’t help but feel that something’s not right about that.”

    December 15, 2014

I don’t believe in Santa Claus—but if he and his reindeer landed on my roof one Christmas Eve, I just might change my mind. As the old adage goes, “Seeing is believing.”

  • “I Am a God”: Pharaoh’s Hardened Heart

    December 11, 2014

The trailer for Ridley Scott’s upcoming epic Exodus: Gods and Kings offers a revealing glimpse of Pharaoh’s character, showing the angry king shouting defiantly, “I am the god! I am the god!” The ancient Egyptian pharaohs were indeed considered gods. They were absolute monarchs of what was probably the most powerful nation on Earth.

In August of this year, reports surfaced of a crisis in Toledo, Ohio, that “sent more than 500,000 metro Toledo residents scrambling for bottled water.”1 The municipal water had become undrinkable and even unusable for bathing due to contamination by harmful blue-green algae.

The star that appeared to the Magi, indicating the promised Messiah’s arrival and prompting a pilgrimage to Judea, has sparked much speculation.1 The Magi saw the same star reappear one to two years after its first appearance while on their short journey between Jerusalem and Bethlehem, following a consultation with King Herod and his court.

Although scientists have discovered thousands of exoplanets (planets orbiting stars other than the Sun), the list of features measured is still pretty small: mass, orbit, physical size, and occasional glimpses of the atmosphere. These measurements are impressive accomplishments, but they still fall short of helping answer the question on everyone’s mind: Is there life in the universe beyond Earth?

Most larger construction projects usually include one critical step when multiple things have to come together at the right time and in the right way. When building an addition onto the back of my house, that step occurred when erecting the walls.

The latest Ebola outbreak has elicited a lot of fear—justifiably so. The potential for a pandemic highlights the critical need for epidemiologists to understand the origin and spread of human pathogens.

    November 17, 2014

I distinctly remember feeling uneasiness when I came upon a blue whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling in the Museum of Natural History in London. It wasn’t the skeleton’s massive size that caused my disquiet—it was the small pelvic and hind limb bones suspended in midair, just below the vertebral column, near the skeleton’s posterior end
