ConsciousnessAfter Death I.D.—Will I Still Be Me?By Ronald Nash Most Christians are convinced that people will know each other in heaven. This belief brings great comfort to believers as they watch loved ones pass on. But as popular as this belief may be, many Christians would be hard-pressed to produce much support for it. Body and Soul Part 1: Why Consciousness Isn’t PhysicalBy J. P. Moreland Throughout history, Christianity has been interpreted as giving an affirmative answer to questions about the reality of the three great topics of Western philosophy: namely, God, the soul, and life everlasting. Body and Soul Part 2: Why the Soul is ImmaterialBy J. P. Moreland, Ph.D. Tom's mother lies in a hospital bed in a darkened room. Suddenly, the blips on her heart monitor become erratic. Within seconds, a flat line appears. A nurse hurries into the room and turns the monitor off. After a long illness, Tom’s mom is dead. But is she? Body and Soul Part 3 - More Than Meets the Eye: A Response to PhysicalismBy J. P. Moreland As Megan stood in the checkout line at the grocery store, a magazine caught her eye. On its cover a voluptuous blonde posed nude, certain body parts concealed only by strategic positioning. Sharp anger mixed with grief at the display of "just a body" provoked Megan to complain to the manager. The words "just a body" echoed in her thoughts all the way home. Do False Beliefs Promote Survivability?I have always taken my good memory for granted. Remembering names, dates, and facts has always been easy for me, particularly when it comes to history, philosophy, and sports. I have always wanted to be a contestant on such shows as Jeopardy! or Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? If I got a difficult science question, I could simply phone my friend Hugh Ross! Origin of Soulish AnimalsOngoing debates over the origin of life have focused only on the origin of the physical attributes of life. The origins of the "soulish" and... So Easy a Caveman Could Do It? Part 1 (of 2)Editor's note: this week we present an article by guest scholar Dr. Stan Lennard. The slogan of the popular Geico commercials is now familiar to most television viewing people. It shows the frustration, resentment, and anger of cavemen toward certain twenty-first century corporate executives who portray their company’s product as being so easy to use that these mere cavemen can do it. It is a marvelously successful ad campaign. So Easy a Caveman Could Do It? Part 2 (of 2)Editor's note: this week we present part 2 of an article by guest scholar Dr. Stan Lennard. Last week we explored one aspect of human nature—language—that sets humans apart from animals and we proposed the neural synapse as a mechanism by which a Creator could communicate with humans. In the second part of this article we will consider mind and matter interaction documented by the clinical studies of patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). The Dark and Bright Sides of Cosmology10/1/2007 Astrophysics has its ironies. Here’s one: Studies of the brightest galaxies in the universe led to the discovery that 99 percent of all matter is "dark matter".1 But matter is only part of the universe (about a fourth). The rest is energy. Adding irony to irony, research focusing on the brightest stars in the universe shows that "dark energy" is far more abundant than dark matter, making up most of the rest of the universe. Despite its often negative connotation, this "darkness" is not a bad thing. Uniqueness of Social Cognition in Humansby Hugh Ross, Ph.D. One of the cornerstone doctrines of the Christian faith is that humans alone among all life-forms on Earth are created in the image of God. Part of this image entails that humans are spiritual beings uniquely endowed with the physical apparatus to engage in spiritual activity. According to the Bible, this image of God did not evolve within the human species. It appeared fully established and fully functional when God created the first human male and female.
