Scientific Evidence for an Old EarthA Beginner's-and Expert's-Guide to the Big Bang: Sifting Facts from Fictions7/1/2000 Big bang cosmology is an explosive topic. Heated reactions—and bitter resistance—have arisen from opposite directions in the last century but, ironically, for the same type of reasons: religious reasons. One group of big bang opponents includes those who understand the theory’s implications, and the other, those who misunderstand them. A Dark Galaxy: Finding the "Missing" Dark Stuff10/27/2008 Many independent sets of observations confirm that only about six percent of all the ordinary matter (neutrons and protons) in the universe is made up of stars and stellar remnants.1 The other 94 percent is dark. While astronomers have verified that enormous quantities of ordinary dark matter exist as dispersed intergalactic gas, they have yet to positively identify a totally dark structure of galactic proportions. A New Kind of Star Solves an Old Problem7/9/2007 It is not every day that Hollywood discovers a new star that stands apart from all their other stars. The same is true for astronomers. Only rarely do they discover a new kind of star that is unlike any they have seen before. When they do make such a discovery, however, it typically reveals new insights into how the universe was exquisitely designed to provide a home for life and for humanity in particular.by Hugh Ross Antarctica and North America Once Connected10/22/2008 From a biblical perspective, the advent of continents plays a critical role in God’s transformation of Earth from “formless and void” to an environment teeming with diverse life-forms. In fact, the formation of continents warrants mention as one of the miracles performed on the third day of creation. Arts Own Big Bang Affirms Special Creation1/1/1999 If the naturalists and Darwinists were right about the evolution of humankind, we would expect both the quantity and quality of human artwork to increase gradually over time. New research, however, shows that the opposite is the case. Anthropologists have discovered what they call the “big bang” of artistic expression. Previous to about 40,000 years ago, art appears to have been both rare and “rough,” or crude. AVOIDING A DANGEROUS TRAP1/1/1999 Have you ever wondered why most Christian astronomers reject a young-universe interpretation of Genesis? The answer has to do with Scripture and theology, as well as with science. In my book Creation and Time (not to be confused with the book by the same title subsequently produced by Van Bebber and Taylor), I state that the rules of biblical exegesis support long creation days, an old earth, and an even older universe.' If the creation periods are interpreted as six consecutive 24-hour days, other books of the Bible and other chapters of Genesis become contradictory. Big Bang - The Bible Taught It First!7/1/2000 Most science textbooks that address cosmology credit Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson with the discovery that the universe arose from a hot big bang creation event. While it is true that they were the first (1965) to detect the radiation left over from the creation event Big Bang Buttressed1/1/2000 Belief that the universe was created a finite time ago by a transcendent Creator has been strengthened by evidence yet again. A new piece of astronomical research brings good news for Christians and bad news for anyone denying God’s existence or equating God with the universe itself. Buttressing the Distance Ladder Foundation for Cosmic Creation7/1/2007 Not until Albert Einstein produced his theory of general relativity in 1916 did scientists even consider the possibility that the cosmos continually expands. And yet five ancient writers-Job, David, Isaiah, Jerehiah, and Zechariah-all described this expansion more than two thousand years ago. For centuries the Bible stood alone as the only text making such a claim about the universe. Continental Landmass Growth and the Genesis 1 Chronology10/8/2007 Thanks to a spectacular new discovery concerning the geophysical history of the earth, one more detail in biblical author Moses’ chronology of Earth’s creation history has been scientifically verified. The breakthrough yields yet more evidence for the divine inspiration of the Bible’s words and message. First, let me offer some personal background for this discovery. Continuous Cosmic Expansion10/1/2005 Big bang opponents are a diverse lot. Some promote an infinitely (or near infinitely) old universe to avoid a creation event in the relatively recent (roughly 14-billion-year) past. So, they argue that the universe is static or semi-static-no general cosmic expansion. Others promote a very young creation (6,000-10,000 years old) to fit a particular interpretation of Genesis 1. Cool Discoveries, Part 111/12/2008 Every now and again, a cool scientific discovery comes along that doesn’t have an obvious apologetic connection. I have decided that these discoveries occasionally warrant mention simply because they are interesting. So, here are three. Cosmic Cool Down - What Does It Mean?4/1/2001 Not one but five writers of Scripture describe God’s “stretching out” of the heavens. From a scientist’s perspective, these ancient writers predict the twentieth-century discovery of continual cosmic expansion.1 The book of Romans tells readers that the entire creation is subject to the law of decay. Again, a scientist would see this statement as an obvious reference to the second law of thermodynamics.2 CREATING CREATIONISM: MEANINGS AND USAGE SINCE THE AGE OF AGASSIZ, PART 14/1/1995 Despite a few helpful attempts to trace the development of vocabulary in the public discourse about Darwinism, no one has yet looked closely at the deployment of the terms "creationism" and "creationist" in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries. CREATING CREATIONISM: MEANINGS AND USAGE SINCE THE AGE OF AGASSIZ, PART 24/1/1995 To compound the confusion about special creation [Was it a recent, six-day phenomenon, an ancient day-age phenomenon, or a dual phenomenon with a gap between "the beginning" and Eden?], its most vocal scientific proponents disagreed markedly over the number of supernatural interventions required. CREATING CREATIONISM: MEANINGS AND USAGE SINCE THE AGE OF AGASSIZ, PART 34/1/1995 Such efforts (as "flood geologist" Dudley Joseph Whitney's) to co-opt the creationist label did not go uncontested for long, in part because evangelical scientists who did not subscribe to flood geology could ill afford to have their constituencies view them as non-creationists. Creation of the First Stars1/11/2010 Scientific evidence for the biblically predicted big bang creation model1 is both overwhelming and compelling. Creationism or Science?6/4/2008 A recent article in Science discusses the difficult spiritual journey of Stephen Godfrey. Raised in a strong, Bible-believing home, Godfrey showed great aptitude for both science (particularly biology and paleontology) and art. Deep Core Tests for the Age of the Earth7/1/2005 The clash between young-earth and old-earth creationists can seem bewilderingly technical at times. Is there any easy-to-understand scientific data for determining whether Earth is young or old? Facing Up to Big Bang Challenges1/1/2001 What danger lurks in associating big bang cosmology with biblical cosmology? Most Christian physicists, astronomers, and other scientists would say, “None.” Many Christian philosophers, theologians, pastors, and other nonscientists would say, “A big one.” Galactic Supernova Remnant Disproves Young-Earth Creationist Prediction2/11/2008 Not only can new scientific discoveries put to the test whether or not God exists and performed the role of Creator, they can also discriminate between competing models for creation, including models that claim to be biblically based. On December 1, 2007, a dramatic example of such a discovery appeared in the Astrophysical Journal. Grand Canyon Formed over Millions of Years10/1/2008 So exclaimed my then five-year-old son as our car approached the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Gravitational Lens Test for Creation10/1/2008 Helium Diffusion in Zircon: A Response to Questions by the RATE Team4/22/2009 Radiometric dating methods have long been disputed by young-earth creationists, and for good reason. Rock ages obtained by these dating methods, usually ranging from millions to billions of years, contradict contradict the notion of a 6,000-year-old earth. Historic Age Debate: Beginning of Time7/14/2008 Previously, we noted that the church has unanimously taught the doctrine of creation ex nihilo throughout its history (parts 1-4). This was considered fundamental doctrine and was even included in key creedal statements. The doctrine of creation ex nihilo does, however, have one curious implication: a beginning of time. In other words, if matter has a beginning (i.e., is not eternal) then shouldn’t time have a beginning as well? Historic Age Debate: Creation Ex Nihilo, Part 1 (of 4)June 16, 2008 On October 2007, I began a TNRTB series discussing my research into how the church has understood Genesis 1 and the age of the earth throughout its history. The first two articles gave a quick overview of this topic (see “Overview,” part 1 and part 2). From here on, this series will focus on how earlier theologians interpreted specific Bible verses or wrestled with issues pertaining to the age of the earth. Historic Age Debate: Creation Ex Nihilo, Part 2 (of 4)6/23/2008 The doctrine of creation ex nihilo (“creation out of nothing”) has been firmly and uniformly taught throughout church history and was declared in important creedal statements (detailed in part 1). To understand why this was such a vital doctrine, we need to first consider the contrasting view prevalent throughout the Greco-Roman world at the time of Christ. Historic Age Debate: Creation Ex Nihilo, Part 3 (of 4)6/30/2008 The most important biblical doctrine related to creation is creation ex nihilo, which means “creation out of nothing.” This theologically fundamental belief was taught in important creedal statements [part 1]. It represents a clear line of demarcation between Christianity and Greek philosophy, which held that matter was eternal [part 2]. Historic Age Debate: Creation Ex Nihilo, Part 4 (of 4)7/7/2008 Parts 1-3 of this series have documented the vital theological importance of the doctrine of creation ex nihilo (“creation out of nothing”). Now it is time to consider its impact on science. Three specific examples will be considered here. How Far Tells How Old7/1/2000 The strength of cosmologists’ model for the origin and development of the universe rests in part on the certainty of astronomers’ distance measurements to stars and galaxies. The only direct measurements researchers have had for stellar distances are those based on trigonometry (specifically, a method called “trigonometric parallaxes”). Ice Cores Reveal History10/1/2007 I received a cordless drill for Christmas last year. Many of its features make my around-the-home projects far easier to accomplish: two batteries (one recharges while I use the other), a keyless chuck for easy changing of bits, an LED work light, a built-in level, and a torque adjustment ring, to name a few. Having the proper tools makes a world of difference in the quality and efficiency with which projects get done. Introduction to the Creation-Date Debate2/17/2009 There are a wide variety of types of creationists in Christianity. By types we mean different interpretations of the days in Genesis. Two overarching views are young-earth and old-earth creationism. Reasons to Believe and others have shown (see links within this article) that it and others believe young-earthism is not the literal interpretation of Genesis and is wrought with interpretational and scientific problems. This article will attempt to introduce readers to this position and why we believe it is valid. Most Accurate Distances Shore Up Creation History3/3/2008 Opponents of big bang cosmology, both atheists and young-earth creationists, frequently attempt to push aside very compelling and overwhelming physical evidence in favor of this biblically predicted model1 by picking apart the limiting factor in determining the details of the cosmic creation story. This limiting factor is the ability of astronomers to determine accurate distances to other galaxies. Most Detailed Map of Cosmic Background Radiation Confirms Biblical Creation Model7/1/2006 A team of American and Canadian astronomers dramatically strengthened the case for a big bang creation (thoroughly biblical1) when they released the latest map of radiation left over from the cosmic origin event.2 The team made public their analysis based on three years' continuous observations of that cosmic background radiation via satellite-the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP). Noah’s Flood: A Bird’s-Eye View7/1/2002 Ms. Johnson smiles and settles her class for the week’s lesson. She opens the Bible on her lap and begins to read the story of Noah's flood. Her first-graders sit cross-legged on the floor, wiggling a little but listening quietly. Old-Earth Creationism: A Heretical Belief?8/23/2007 Ken Ham is an ardent young-earth creationist. As president of Answers in Genesis, he generates a steady stream of articles critiquing the old-earth view. Although I disagree with most of his assertions, I respect his right to express them. However, Ham’s article, “The god of an old earth,”1. crosses the line of amicable debate. By declaring “the god of an old earth cannot be the God of the Bible” and “the god of an old earth destroys the Gospel,” he is accusing old-earth creationists of heresy. Predictive Power: Confirming Cosmic Creation4/1/2002 Scientists focus enormous effort on turning detections (observations and measurements) into predictions. Meteorologists use data to predict temperatures, wind, and precipitation. Astronomers use data to predict meteor showers and eclipses. Radiometric Dating - A Christian Perspective1/1/2002 Dr. Wiens has a PhD in Physics, with a minor in Geology. His PhD thesis was on isotope ratios in meteorites, including surface exposure dating. He was employed at Caltech’s Division of Geological & Planetary Sciences at the time of writing the first edition. He is presently employed in the Space & Atmospheric Sciences Group at the Los Alamos National Responses to Young Universe "Answers"1/1/1999 Those who hold the young universe view have offered the following statements to answer questions about this theory. After each statement is a response. Solar System’s Extraordinary Birth Environment2/16/2009 One of the most extraordinary features of the solar system is that it contains adequate abundances of all the elements essential for advanced life. What makes it so exceptional is that the elements must come from different sources. Temperature of the Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation3/1/2010 For thousands of years the Bible stood alone among all theological, philosophical, and scientific texts in making the claim we live in a big bang universe. Ten Major Differences Between Calendar-Day and Day-Age Creationists1/23/2001 cdc = Calendar-Day Creationists Ten Major Similarities Between Calendar-Day and Day-Age Creationists1/23/2001 Ten Major Similarities Between Calendar-Day and Day-Age Creationists Testing Assumptions Confirm Antiquity of Solar System1/13/2010 “[Science] is not perfect. It can be misused. It is only a tool. But it is by far the best tool we have, self-correcting, ongoing, applicable to everything..." Testing Creation Using the Proton to Electron Mass Ratio11/2/2009 For thousands of years the Bible has been on record stating that he laws governing the heavens and earth do not vary. If the constancy of the laws of physics is proven, it would not only establish the Bible's reliable descriptions of nature and predictions of future scientific discoveries, it would also refute young-earth creationism and significantly constrain speculations about string theories and the possibility that scalar fields alter the character of dark energy. The Correspondence of Isaac Newton: Volume II, 1676 - 1687H. W. Turnbull, Ed., Cambridge University Press, 1960 247 Newton To Burnet From the original in King's College Library, Cambridge. The Sun's Stable Diameter10/1/2001 The Sun has the reputation of being the most stable burning star that astronomers observe. Its extreme stability allows humans to exist on Earth. Variations in its burning, periods of significantly greater intensity followed by periods of lesser intensity would render advanced life impossible. The Usefulness of Carbon 141/1/1998 RTB's correspondence team is asked repeatedly to explain methods for dating the age of the universe and earth. The most frequent question has to do with the reliability of carbon 14 dating. Tolman's Elegant Test1/1/2002 The cosmic characteristic most extensively described in the Bible is the ongoing expansion of the universe. No other holy book of the world's religions describes this feature, nor was it anticipated by secular scholars before the development of Einstein's theory of general relativity. Tool to Potentially Measure the Oort Cloud9/2/2009 Comets inspire a sense of awe in most people. I remember vividly witnessing the comet Hyakutake (pictured below on the left with comet Hale-Bopp on the right) as it passed through the inner solar system in 1996. Wheat Tells a Story of Beginnings1/1/1999 DNA “fingerprinting” helps with investigations beyond the criminal courtroom. In one recent case, this research technique was applied to the study of agriculture’s origin, and the results provide a significant corroboration of biblical historicity. According to that study, White Dwarfs Deliver Better Creation History1/21/2008 Star clusters provide astronomers with an extraordinary window into the creation and history of the universe, a window that enables astronomers to rigorously test the biblically predicted big bang creation model. Thanks to a new set of measurements on burnt out stars—known as white dwarfs—that window has become much clearer and more robust.
